Users Coming Off Slimming Medications Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals using such treatments must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Treatments

The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
